“Ring Da Bell”īefore Beyonce rang the alarm, Monica made noise with this Dallas Austin-produced track. Monica deserves an applause for her stirring rendition of Dorothy Moore’s signature selection. “Right Here Waiting” featuring 112Įvidently, Monica’s then-label Artista had a point to prove to listeners and critics with a second cover of another classic. It’s a good song but the melody and chilled production of this dreamy slow jam sounds too similar to records from Xscape’s catalog. “Gone Be Fine” featuring OutkastĮven with tight production and a brief appearance from Outkast, something is still missing from what was supposed to be a bomb collaboration. Out of the LP’s 13-tracks, this party-starter anthem is definitely one that finds the crowd telling the DJ to turn it all the way down. “Take Him Back”Įvery album has its fillers and I guess this dull recording slipped through the track list cracks. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Monica’s album The Boy is Mine, Rated R&B has ranked the songs from minimal rotation to heavy rotation. The 13-track LP garnered multi-platinum success and a grand total of three number one singles (“The Boy is Mine,” “Angel of Mine” and “The First Night”) on the Billboard Hot 100. 8, selling 91,000 copies in its first week of sales. The Boy is Mine entered the Billboard 200 at No. Monica’s newfound maturity, enhanced confidence and tender outlook on relationships resonated with those in and out of love. I speak on those subjects for what I know them to be.” I’m 17 now my lyrics aren’t sexually explicit but are about love and being in love. It’s fine to be a teen female, but there are certain decisions they must with assurance. “I’m trying to portray a more assertive young female. “I was 13 the themes weren’t as mature,” she told Billboard in a 1998 interview. She talks with so much confidence which isn't a bad thing in my book. For The Boy is Mine, the 17-year-old singer defined the new batch of songs as a “natural progression” from her debut. Side note: I can see how Monica can rub off that "I've got a chip on my shoulder/I'm better than you/I am all knowing" vibe.

I think she is exploring more on this new album which is yet to be released and I love that! I cant wait to hear these songs! Her voice had sooo much conviction for a 12-13 year recording all these songs! I sometimes wonder how she would sound when paired to other songs that aren't in line with the "Miss Thang" image/brand (I am nice but don't mess with me kinda brand she's had since she came on the scene) Her voice is synonymous to a style of song writing since she was 12 and I feel she's been singing about the same themes all these years, so while the song production has slightly varied at its core the writing aspect and sound has generally stayed the same. I wish she talked about how on the music business side, how well her albums sold and the records it set! Monica really came in swinging with Miss Thang in 1995.
#6 MONICA MISS THANG HOW TO#
She made it her own lool I am sure once she got the record deal the producers were able to train and offer insights on how to sing without doing too much and sacrificing the authenticity of her vocals. That talent show performance of the greatest love of all killed me haha! Sis was really oversinging but for a child she did sooo well. I loved this documentary!! I loved all the behind the scenes footage, her commentary.
